music

the true test of music is not is it any good, but does it make you shiver, and hairs stand up on the back of your neck.
so far this year the only songs to have met this standard are 'Crazy' by Gnarls Barkley, Johnny Cash's San Quentin song, and 'Back to the Future', track 11 on the Futuristic Sex Robots' album 'Hotel Coral Essex'.

Comments:
Crazy and the Cash song are both pretty good. I must confess ignorance of 'Futuristic Sex Robots'. I'll have to look it up. Here are five tracks that I believe pass the same test:

* Belle & Sebastian - I'm A Cuckoo
* The Shins - New Slang
* Frou Frou - Let Go
* The Postal Service - The District Sleeps Alone
* Sufjan Stevens - Chicago

... and here are five more:

* The Books - An Animated Description Of Mr. Maps
* Radiohead - Life In A Glass House
* The Mountain Goats - If You See Light
* Wolf Parade - I'll Believe In Anything
* Guster - Come Downstairs And Say Hello

Five slightly older, yet terrific songs:

* Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
* Nico - These Days
* New Order - Temptation
* Paul Simon - Graceland
* Elliott Smith - Needle In The Hay

Yet more terrific songs:

* Simon & Garfunkel - The Only Living Boy In New York
* Bright Eyes - Let's Not Shit Ourselves (To Love And To Be Loved)
* Counting Crows - Anna Begins
* Death Cab For Cutie - Transatlantacism
* The Decemberists - The Crane Wife 1 & 2

I have (where avaialable) provided links to the iTunes Music Store for each track in order to enhance your listening pleasure. All that HTML formatting is a pain in the ass, so I will fly to England and personally stab you in the face if you don't click on each and every one of them.

Hmm. Perhaps more menacing sounding than intended.

Also, The Futuristic Sex Robots are great, as promised.

I wake up in a room, am I going insane?
A hot slut says, "Howdy! My name is Lorraine."
I'm like, "What the fuck? Is this my mom?"
Definitely is, and she is coming on strong.

you are absolutely right about 'let go' by Frou Frou. it's one of the songs that inspired the criterion.

however, itunes is Evil. therefore, you lose.

Shakira's My hips don't lie.
Shakira is the only living genius who has been in the charts for quite some time

It doesn't have a tune and you can't hear the words!

And neither of those points were named by Jack as criteria

right, it's not necessary for it not to have a tune or the words to be inaudible, those are just bonus points

How about 'Teardrop' by Massive Attack. The words aren't inaudible, but they are unintelligible. I will refrain from posting an evil link, so you'll have to imagine the tune yourself.

another shivery song (i don't mean shakira)
